Acupuncture – Natural Holistic Therapy

Acupuncture is a natural, holistic therapy that is part of a system of Traditional Chinese Medicine (T.C.M) that originated in China over 3,000 years ago which treats a broad range of health problems. Acupuncture is an effective drug free therapy that involves the gentle insertion of fine, sterile needles into specific points in the body to restore balance to the body and mind.

According to T.C.M all our bodies have lines of energy (Qi) running through channels or meridians which are energetically linked to specific organs in our bodies. When our energy is flowing freely in the correct direction, unimpeded in our body we have good health in mind, body and spirit. We have plenty of energy, sleep well, good digestion, good appetite and a healthy emotional life.

However when a blockage or stagnation occurs in these channels an illness can occur including poor energy, headaches, sleep disturbances, digestive disorders, emotional disturbances to name but a few.

“Acupuncture has been used for centuries as a means to help women fall pregnant. If you need a little help with fertility issues, whatever your age or are preparing for IVF, acupuncture can help.” – Pauline (Founder)

T.C.M practitioners as part of their training thought to assess the persons health as a whole system, viewing the physical, mental and emotional states as an interconnected system. The initial consultation involves asking the client to complete a detailed questionnaire about their health, lifestyle, dietary and exercise habits. From the information gathered an individual treatment plan is developed focusing on both the cause (root) and the symptoms of the disorder are treated. The treatment works by releasing any blockages or stagnation within the body and promoting healing and harmonious health from within.

What should I expect on the first appointment?
The first appointment usually takes 90 minutes followed by shorter sessions usually lasting 45 -60 minutes. During the first appointment, a history of your current health concerns will be discussed and depending on what therapy is agreed upon, a detailed health profile, including current medication, past operations, medical history, lifestyle and an assessment of your current health. An individual plan will be discussed and an outline of the proposed treatment discussed.
If you haven’t experienced acupuncture before, a needle can be inserted into the hand in order for you to feel the sensation and ensure you are comfortable with the experience.
What should I do for my first Acupuncture appointment?

Bring a list of current medicine and any supplements e.g herbal, vitamins, etc.
It is advisable to wear loose clothing that gives access to the arms and legs easily. Most of the points used during a treatment session are on the lower arms and legs, the abdomen, back and head.

Usually the Acupuncturist will do an assessment of the tongue and pulse. It is helpful to avoid foods that colour the tongue, brushing the tongue surface and tea/coffee on the day of the appointment to ensure the coating on the tongue is in natural state. Alcohol, caffeine based drinks and heavy meals in the 2-3 hours prior to the appointment as they can interfere with the pulse.

Does acupuncture hurt?
Fine, sterile, single application needles are used during the treatment. These needles are extremely fine and are designed to be inserted into the tissue easily. There can be a slight pricking sensation on insertion of the needle and if a Qi sensation is obtained the range of sensations can vary from a dull ache to mild tingling. Once the needles have been inserted, the sensations settle down and usually you won’t feel anything. The needles are removed after 35 minutes and usually you won’t notice this happening. Slight bleeding can occur and usually is stopped by applying cotton swabs to the area. Bruising can occur and sensitivity in the area can be experienced, depending on the techniques used.
