Dietary Therapy
Chinese Medicine uses foods to help a patient maintain health and prevent disease, as well as to treat disharmonies when they occurDietary Therapy
In Traditional Chinese Medicine dietary therapy is an integral part of any treatment plan. The food you consume forms the building blocks for good health and poor nutrition will impact on our overall well being.
Eating too much sweet, salty, fatty foods will impair your body’s ability to function to its optimum level making it more prone to illness and diseases. The foods you eat ideally should be based on your constitution in order to promote good health.
During the initial assessment the T.C.M practitioner will ask you about your eating habits to identify if you are prone to eating or desire a particularly type of food. Excessive consumption of one particular type of food can lead to an imbalance within the body and you may need to make changes in your diet to support the healing process.

“Chinese dietary therapy is an integral part of any complete treatment plan as diet provides a precious opportunity for safeguarding good health and preventing disease.” – Pauline (Founder)
In T.C.M there are five basic Tastes which are connected to our major organs
- Sour is connected to the Liver and Gallbladder
- Sweet is connected to the Spleen and Stomach
- Bitter is connected to the Heart and Small Intestines
- Salty is connected to the Kidney and Bladder
- Pungent is connected to the Lungs and Large Intestine
Excessive consumption of any one of these tastes can lead to an imbalance within its associated organ.
The Nature of foods will also be considered by the practitioner:
Do they have Hot or Cold producing properties? Do they produce damp or phlegm (mucus)? etc.

What should I expect on the first appointment?
What should I do for my first Acupuncture appointment?
Bring a list of current medicine and any supplements e.g herbal, vitamins, etc. It is advisable to wear loose clothing that gives access to the arms and legs easily. Most of the points used during a treatment session are on the lower arms and legs, the abdomen, back and head.
Usually the Acupuncturist will do an assessment of the tongue and pulse. It is helpful to avoid foods that colour the tongue, brushing the tongue surface and tea/coffee on the day of the appointment to ensure the coating on the tongue is in natural state. Alcohol, caffeine based drinks and heavy meals in the 2-3 hours prior to the appointment as they can interfere with the pulse.

My experience at the haven was warm and professional. My therapist put me at ease as it was my first time getting acupuncture. I felt well informed and listened to. Not only did I see results after a couple of sessions it also created benefits in other areas of my life. I was more relaxed and less stressed. I would highly recommend them.

Holistic Healing Haven provides amazing acupuncture for a range of different things. When I first went I was very nervous of needles but they were very patient and caring and now I really look forward to the sessions. Pauline, the owner, is very knowledgeable on alternative healing and takes a personal interest in their client’s well being.
My health has improved dramatically since starting acupuncture. It helps me relax and I can feel the benefits that the needles are achieving – which don’t bother me, due to Pauline’s approach. Even after the session, she is always doing research and finding ways to improve each subsequent treatment, which is a testament to her professionalism.
