Traditional Chinese Medicine has always incorporated the power of thoughts and feelings on our physical and emotional health but Western medicine is only now starting to recognize the link.  Research is showing a clear connection between the workings of the mind and its impact on our physical health and well-being.  When people are trying to conceive a baby for a period of time it can become difficult and stressful for both partners that can require a lot of support.  The feelings of failure, fear it won’t happen worthlessness, ( Kidney energy)  anxiety /worry over will it or won’t it happen, (Spleen Qi)  jealousy of others getting pregnant, anger and resentment (Liver Qi stagnation) can all build up in the mind and body causing negative effects on fertility.   Hypnotherapy is a fast acting therapy that can cut to the chase and help you to manage these thoughts and feeling, preventing them negatively impacting on your fertility health.

What is hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is an induced state of trance which involves focusing the client’s attention on a sensory experience.  Once the client is in a trance like a state it facilitates the hypnotherapist to connect with the client’s subconscious mind to make the desired positive changes.  See hypnotherapy for more information.

How Hypnotherapy can improve fertility by:

  • Reducing Stress Level

Using Hypnotherapy can REDUCE STRESS, by inducing feelings of calmness and relaxation, while enhancing physical, emotional and mental well-being.  Stress is a major obstacle to conception affecting both physical and mental health. Stress can affect the production of sex hormones, fertile mucus, uterine lining and the menstrual cycle. Increasing levels of stress can cause anxiety, increasing levels of despair and hopelessness.   The overall effect of hypnosis is one of complete relaxation benefiting your parasympathetic nervous system reducing the effects of cortisol and adrenaline (Stress Hormones) on the body.  Overall it improves both the mind and body’s response to stress through the power of positive suggestion.

  • Removing Mental and Emotional Blocks

Sometimes there are unexplained mental and emotional reasons as to why a conception is not occurring which can stem from either partner.  The unconscious mind can be a barrier to getting pregnant as past experiences and traumas can be locked away in the unconscious mind preventing conception from occurring. Previous experiences including miscarriages, terminations and unresolved grief can all impact on the ability to conceive.  Fears for the future can also pose an obstacle to successful conception of a baby including worries about money, parenthood, giving birth, the changes having a baby will have on your lives and intimacy issues.

Often the person involved may not realise the impact of these thoughts on their bodies and that the mind, not the body is preventing the conception.  Sometimes these blocks can manifests physically by the lack of interest in having sex or avoiding sex which can be misperceived by the other partners as a lack of interest having a baby or perceived as rejection. Using specific techniques the hypnotherapist works with the client’s subconscious mind to remove and replace any thoughts blocking the process with more positive productive thoughts.  Acknowledging these thoughts can be an important turning point on the journey to getting pregnant.

  • Preparing for conception

I would recommend prior to conceiving taking 3-4 months to prepare for conception getting your mind and body into good health particularly if you are in your 30’s. If you are in particularly poor health you may need to consider longer. The better your health is the better the chance of conception, successful pregnancy and a healthy baby. We are the sum of our physical, mental and emotional inputs.

The basic changes:

  1. Reduce or cut out Alcohol, Cigarettes, Sweet food
  2. Each more Fruit, Vegetables and Fish in your diet.
  3. Drink the recommended 8 glasses of water a day.
  4. If over or underweight it is a good idea to address this ahead of time as either can impact on your fertility.
  5. Incorporate 3-4 sessions of exercise into  your weekly routine
  6. Build in relaxation e.g Yoga, Meditation, Self-Hypnosis, Pilates, Walking in Nature into your routine.

Hypnotherapy can gently guide the subconscious mind to prepare for conception, parenthood and using visualisations to encourage the mind and body to constructively work together to improve the chances of pregnancy.   Visualisations to enhance the parent’s current health, support the parents to be to adapt to parenthood, improve sexual intimacy and support necessary health changes can use to get you ready

  • Hypnotherapy and ART

When deciding to use Artificial Reproductive Techniques such as IVF, IUI and ICSI hypnotherapy techniques can play an important role in supporting the success of ART techniques.  It can promote relaxation, encourage the woman to reconnect with her body and help reduce the side effects of the medication.  The road to ART can have been a long one, therefore, promoting the best emotional, mental and physical well-being will be an important factor in increasing success rate.
